So it appears that Monotype Imaging has just purchased Linotype GmbH.
Monotype is probably best known to designers as resellers of typefaces. Also, according to their website:
“We supply font and imaging solutions to OEMs of printers and MFPs, manufacturers and developers of consumer electronics devices such as mobile phones and set-top boxes, developers of system software and application software, and to creative professionals worldwide.”
Linotype is also well known for reselling typefaces, as well as probably the least-known yet best-performing free font management application for OS X, FontExplorer X.
